LIS 560: Instruction Methods for Information Professionals

In LIS 560, Instruction Methods for Information Professionals, I had the opportunity to create an online presentation. For my presentation, I chose to teach teachers about how to incorporate various teaching methods in order to reach students of all learning styles. This experience taught me how to utilize a small amount of time to craft a message in order to instruct a specific audience on a topic. Preparing a lesson, particularly in an online setting, has numerous challenges, one of them being that it is hard to interact and engage with your audience if it is a pre-recorded, online presentation. It was a very rewarding experience, at the end, to see my research, lesson planning, and practice pay off in a coherent, clear presentation. I used PowerPoint and VoiceThread to create my presentation.

The purpose of the presentation was to demonstrate how to use different teaching methods to address various learning styles.  To demonstrate, the learning objective is to construct an origami crane using four different methods of instruction. The presentation was geared towards teachers or student teachers to gain a fuller appreciation of how differently each one of us learns. Link to learning styles presentation

Feedback from instructor David Willer on my presentation:

"'Teaching teachers how to use different teaching methods for different styles of learning' is a good topic and your work demonstrates that you can transfer the skills you used in this presentation to create any other lesson or training session in the future. You addressed both ARCS and learning styles for your training plan. Your provided an overview of your presentation as a focusing device. You competently used technology to present your lesson, your voice was clearly enthusiastic and gave an air of confidence to your presentation.

This presentation shows that you are passionate about your topic. The organization was logical, sequential, and built upon each stage of learning.

This was a very effective lesson! Would it be okay if I keep a copy as a demo for future classes? Thanks for your time and effort this quarter. All the best with your future."

Gates Foundation Presentation: Searching within Twitter

One of the Program Officers I work with at the Gates Foundation asked me if I could help him search for lists and groups within Twitter. I created a tutorial for him, and from that, I was asked to give an informal presentation to the team about Twitter, how to use Twitter, and how to search within Twitter. The team will be using Twitter for an upcoming conference, so I was able to provide a brief overview and suggestions on how to enhance their Twitter use, as well as utilizing the web-based tool as an information resource.

The Twitter tutorial I created can be found here.
